DOES Banksy read the New Journal?

Just a week after we contrasted his fortunes with those of Tox, the graffiti artist known as the “King of the Taggers”, he appeared to have his own say in the debate yesterday (Wednesday).

On a wall in Jeffrey’s Street, Camden Town, he appeared to have left his mark with an image of a boy creating bubbles in Tox’s name. Daniel Halpin, who lives on the Maiden Lane Estate, is the man suspected of being Tox, one of ...

Imminent Disaster in DUMBO (Gothamist/ Jake Dobkin)

Yesterday we learned that the Brooklyn Museum was cancelling plans to host "Art In The Streets," a graffiti and street art-themed exhibition currently at LA's Museum of Contemporary Design. The Museum says their reasons are purely economic, though the show had already raised some ire before it even opened, and has been tied to a spike in graffiti-related arrests in LA. We spoke to some prominent street artists and gallerists here about their ...

Though we love the art form, the street art that transforms dull city walls into eye catching murals, is still considered vandalism to the world at large.  Graffiti artist Revok whose works have been exhibited in authentic museums like MoCa was sentenced to 180 days for his participation in MoCA’s Art In the Streets exhibit.  His participation was said to be promoting vandalism and tagging.

Many disagree with his imprisonment and in support, fellow street artist Mr. Brainwash is making a lim...

Russia complains to Bulgaria over the defacing of a Soviet-era monument. According to reports in Bulgaria, the statue has already been scrubbed clean of superheroes.

The Internet was all abuzz this week with this photo of a sculpture in Bulgaria, transformed from a Soviet celebration of Red Army soldiers into a colorful display of superhero glory (including Superman, the Joker and, er, Santa Claus).

Those who bought tickets to Sofia to take a look at the instant p...

LAS VEGAS -- Night after night, vandals grab a cheap can of spray paint and do costly damage in just seconds. Graffiti is a $30 million problem each year in southern Nevada.

Las Vegas police arrested 750 taggers last year alone, and a newly-signed law is about to give Nevada the toughest graffiti rules in the country.

The historic Welcome to Las Vegas sign was defaced twice in 2009. If anyone is caught vandalizing it under the new anti-graffiti law, the crime becomes a felony.

Posted by Tag One on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, In : Battle

NAMES changed to protect identities, this is the story of a man named Tox, who is facing a prison sentence for drawing on walls, and a man named Banksy, who has made a mint and enjoyed unprecedented adulation for, um, drawing on walls.

In fact, Banksy is now so renowned that his artwork of a rat in Clipstone Street, Fitzrovia, may have escaped the dreaded prospect of being whitewashed this week by gaining the protection of a Perspex screen.

But we’ll come to that later.

Tox, in contrast to his...

A Queens pol who has championed anti-graffiti laws wants to crack down on "fat caps," a device he says vandals put on spray-paint cans to tag wider areas in less time.

Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. said he will introduce legislation this month to ban sales of fat caps to anyone under 21 and require older patrons to show ID.

He previously helped pass laws that restrict the sale of spray-paint cans and broad-tipped markers. He has also sponsored a bill restricting the sale of etching acid.
