Vandals get off lightly despite new penalties

Graffiti vandals are escaping the full force of the law, with just two of the 141 people arrested during a police crackdown on damage to buses and trains sent behind bars.

An analysis of punishments handed to adults and youths arrested during the first two phases of Operation Eraser last year shows almost 70 per cent had been previously caught by police but many emerged from court with no formal punishment.

And the biggest financial penalty of the 26...

Unusual rapport was demonstrated back in October when graffiti artist Saber and mural ordinance code breaker Tanner Blackman were both asked to describe outreach between street artist and city.

The artist, just a few weeks after tagging the skies over City Hall with "Art is not a crime," quickly spun around and placed his hands on a wall he painted.

Anti-graffiti campaign under way in Brooklyn

Posted by Tag One on Monday, December 12, 2011, In : New Laws
An anti-graffiti campaign is under way in Brooklyn to help business owners keep their buildings clean and keep customers spending money.

Some consider the colorful spray-paint graffiti to be street art, but in the bustling business district of Bay Ridge along 3rd, 4th and 5th avenues, it is frowned upon.

Dennis Monier has owned Tops Restaurant Supply for 43 years, and he also lives in Bay Ridge, so his neighborhood pride runs deep. He was dismayed on Sunday morning to see gra...

L.A. Council considers lifting ban on murals

Posted by Tag One on Thursday, December 8, 2011, In : New Laws

As Richard Winton put it in the L.A. Times; “From the aging homages to Chicano history on the Eastside to Shephard Fairey’s towering “Peace Goddess” watching over downtown, Los Angeles has earned a reputation as the street mural capital of the world.” But for nearly a decade most of this artwork has been done illegally, all thanks to a city-wide ordinance prohibiting murals on the vast majority of private property.

    Saber

For the artist Saber, participation in the democratic process has always been complicated. He's an international graffiti legend, holding the world record for the largest graffiti piece, done along the LA river in 1997. Despite its place in the history books, the city of Los Angeles spent a whopping $837,000 to paint over it in 2009. Now Saber is approaching public art laws from a different angle, spearheading an effort to reform...

Nevada Law Makes Graffiti Punishment Strictest in the Nation

Posted by Tag One on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, In : New Laws

LAS VEGAS -- Night after night, vandals grab a cheap can of spray paint and do costly damage in just seconds. Graffiti is a $30 million problem each year in southern Nevada.

Las Vegas police arrested 750 taggers last year alone, and a newly-signed law is about to give Nevada the toughest graffiti rules in the country.

The historic Welcome to Las Vegas sign was defaced twice in 2009. If anyone is caught vandalizing it under the new anti-graffiti law, the crime becomes a felony.

Queens pol Peter Vallone Jr. seeks to crack down on 'fat caps,' a common graffiti tool

Posted by Tag One on Monday, June 6, 2011, In : New Laws

A Queens pol who has championed anti-graffiti laws wants to crack down on "fat caps," a device he says vandals put on spray-paint cans to tag wider areas in less time.

Councilman Peter Vallone Jr. said he will introduce legislation this month to ban sales of fat caps to anyone under 21 and require older patrons to show ID.

He previously helped pass laws that restrict the sale of spray-paint cans and broad-tipped markers. He has also sponsored a bill restricting the sale of etching acid.

Clean-up crews are being equipped with smart phones and told they must photograph any graffiti they are going to remove.
