Posted by Tag One on Monday, May 14, 2012, In : War on Graff

Earlier this week, graffiti artist Kidulttagged Marc Jacobs's Soho boutiquewith the word ART in hot-pink letters, tweeting a photo of his work on Tuesday. Presumably grumpy Marc employees scrubbed down the storefront that morning, enduringcamera-phone photo shoots by gawking pedestrians, and then business continued as usual. But later this week, the label announced that they would sell hot pink "Art by Art Jacobs" T-shirts emblazoned with photos of the graffiti'd store. "Available now for $68...

Last night, the Marc Jacobs store in SoHo at Mercer below Houston was hit with a blast of graffiti by a graffiti artist apparently notorious for hitting fashion labels. This morning, after it was cleaned up, Marc Jacobs’ PR machine appropriated it for their own branding. Smart.

The perpetrator was a French graf artist named Kidult, who apparently has a long lineage of blasting fashion labels with his stuff: 12 Oz. Prophet explains that Kidult has previously hit stores of Chri...

Banksy painted over Robbo's work. Spray-paints at dawn!
Banksy painted over Robbo's work. Spray-paints at dawn!

Before Banksy's work became the object of desire for champagne-sipping, canapé-snaffling hedge fund managers at auction houses' private views, there was something of the curled lip about street art. Indeed, for years it wasn't known as street art but graffiti - the painted defacement of walls. London in the Noughties saw the evolution of that view: there could be a legitimate artistic value of this sort of work. Howe...

Dispatches from the graffiti wars

Posted by Tag One on Monday, August 29, 2011, In : War on Graff

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the graffiti wars, which, according to sassy new Bay Area documentary Vigilante Vigilante, are already in progress. Filmmakers Max Good and Nathan Wollman started their project a few years back with a provocative new theory: that a new breed of citizen vigilante – perhaps the street art world's version of a Tea Party activist – has taken upon themselves to supplement city graffiti abatement programs. These "buffers" (named after the common term for graffit...

Graffiti Is More Than Writing On The Wall

Posted by Tag One on Monday, October 25, 2010, In : War on Graff

In most of Fresno, graffiti is viewed as an eye sore, an act of vandalism.  At the Chris Sorensen wall on Railroad, just north of Church, it is a celebrated work of art, and artists gather to express themselves with paint.

"I do it for the love of graffiti and art in general," said an artist known as Doom41 who displays his art on the free-wall. Another artist, Reken, said, "Graffiti has opened my eyes to a whole new world; it's kept me away from gangs and given me a positive outlet...
